Sea freight rates will likely continue to decline in the fourth quarter

Recently, the third quarter 2022 China Shipping Sentiment Report released by the Shanghai International Shipping Research Centre showed that the China Shipping Sentiment Index was 97.19 points in the third quarter, down 8.55 points from the second quarter, entering a weakly depressed range; the China Shipping Confidence Index was 92.34 points, down 36.09 points from the second quarter, falling from a more prosperous range to a weakly depressed range. Both the sentiment and confidence indices fell to the depressed range for the first time since the third quarter of 2020.

This laid the groundwork for a weaker trend in the Chinese shipping market in the fourth quarter. Looking ahead to the fourth quarter, the Shanghai International Shipping Research Centre forecasts that the China Shipping Prosperity Index is expected to be 95.91 points, down 1.28 points from the third quarter, remaining in a weakly sluggish range; the China Shipping Confidence Index is expected to be 80.86 points, down 11.47 points from the third quarter, falling into a relatively sluggish range. All types of shipping companies’ confidence indices showed different degrees of decline, and the market as a whole maintained a pessimistic trend.

It is worthy of attention that since the second half of the year, with the weakening of global shipping demand, shipping rates have fallen across the board, and the BDI index has even fallen below 1000 points, and the future trend of the shipping market is of great concern to the industry. Shanghai International Shipping Research Center recently survey results show that more than 60% of port and shipping enterprises believe that the fourth quarter sea freight will continue to decline.

In the surveyed ship transport enterprises, 62.65% of enterprises think that the fourth quarter sea freight will continue to decline, of which 50.6% of enterprises think it will decline 10%-30%; in the surveyed container transport enterprises, 78.94% of enterprises think that the fourth quarter sea freight will continue to decline, of which 57.89% of enterprises think it will decline 10%-30%; in the surveyed In the surveyed port enterprises, there are 51.52% of enterprises think that the fourth quarter sea freight is a continuous decline, only 9.09% of enterprises think that the next quarter sea freight will rise 10% ~ 30%; In the surveyed shipping service enterprises, there are 61.11% of enterprises think that the fourth quarter sea freight will continue to decline, of which 50% of enterprises think it will fall 10% ~ 30%.
